Help, What's New, and the Road Map

How to search, and where the site is going

The Help menu holds three pages. How to Search explains every kind of search with examples you can click to run. What's New is a timeline of every feature since 2009. The Road Map shows what is being worked on now and what is next.

How to Search

There is one search box, and it tries to work out what you meant. Type a number and you get everything that number touches. Type a reference and you land on the verse. Type a word, a phrase, a Strong's number, or a calculation, and it sorts out which one you had in mind. Everything below is a shortcut for telling it directly.

17 search types · What's new · Road map

Searching the Structure

Most Bible software searches the words. The purpose of this engine is to search the frame — positions, distances, counts, and values — because Scripture is built as well as written. The searches below let you ask questions about that structure directly.

Quick Reference

Every prefix and symbol the search box understands.

Numbers & Math

Number Searches

The number search is the one most particular to this site. Search a single number and you get back a sampling of everything related to it. A search for 2424 — the Greek Strong's number for Jesus — returns all of the following at once.

This is the search everything else on the site grew out of. You are not asking one question, you are asking every question I know how to ask about a number, all at once.

2424
186282
The speed of light in miles per second. Larger than the number of verses in the Bible, so the result is given as revolutions around Scripture plus a remainder.
Factorization
Factors: 2424 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 x ( 101 )
Strong's Definitions
Both Hebrew and Greek Strong's definitions, and their nearest neighbors.
Webster's 1828 Words by Position
The 1828 Webster's words at the searched position in both volumes, A–L and M–Z.
Mnemonics
Words spelled numerically by ordinal position or by your phone's keypad — every word of Webster's 1828 and of the King James is indexed.
Bible Search by Strong's Number
A sampling of verses from Hebrew and Greek Strong's searches, and their nearest neighbors.
Bible Search by Verse Position
Verses at that distance from the major and minor pillars of Scripture.
Bible Search by Calculated Verse Position
Verses from the beginning at calculated distances relative to the number.
Bible Search by Reversed Number
The same, using the number reversed.
Bible Search by Verse Gematria
Every verse in Greek and Hebrew whose numeric values add up to the number.
Bible Search by Alphanumeric Words
A sampling of verses containing the number written out in words.
Bible Search by BCV and CV Numbers
Verses matching the Book-Chapter-Verse and Chapter-Verse numbers, Old and New Testament.
Bible Search by KJV Word Position
The verses holding the KJV word at that position, in both Testaments.

Calculated Number Searches

Prefix a calculation with =. In most cases you will not need to — type a calculation and the search works out that you meant to calculate it.

=(1000+234)*10/2
(1000+234)*10/2
+234
To search relative to the number you are already on, start with +, -, *, or /.

Date Difference Calculation

Give it two dates separated by a - and it returns the days between them. The leading = is optional. Leave off the second date and it uses today; the hyphen is then optional too.

The number of days between two dates is a number like any other — which means it can then be searched as a verse position, a word position, or a gematria value.

=5/14/1948 - 8/22/1969
6/7/1967

Alphanumeric Word Searches

Scripture writes its numbers out in words, and rarely the same way twice. Rather than remembering whether it reads an hundred threescore and fifteen or something else, put an A in front of the number and let the search find every spelling.

A730
A153
Returns John 21:11 — an hundred and fifty and three.
A666

Words & Phrases

Word Searches

Search one word or several. You can mix in a Strong's number or an alphanumeric number in the same search. End a word with * to wildcard it.

God loved G2889
A153 fishes
God love*

Append to a Search

To narrow the search you just ran instead of starting over, put an & in front of the new term.

Worth knowing early. Most searches on this site are arrived at by narrowing, not by getting the question right on the first attempt.

& G2424

Repeats Within One Verse

To find a word, Strong's number, or phrase repeated inside a single verse, either type it that many times or use the shorthand term{min, max}.

God God God
Verses where God appears 3 or more times.
God{3,}
The same thing, written shorter.
God{4}
Verses where God appears exactly 4 times.
"God loved"{,2}
Verses where the phrase appears up to 2 times.
G2316{2,3}
Verses where G2316 appears 2 to 3 times.

Strong's

Strong's Number Searches

Put an H in front for Hebrew, or a G for Greek.

H430
H430 searches Hebrew Strong's # 430 for the Hebrew word for God.
G2424
G2424 searches Greek Strong's # 2424 for the Greek word for Jesus.

Strong's List Searches

Add a hyphen - between two Strong's numbers for a range, or trail a single number with a hyphen to list from there onward.

H452-H477
Lists Hebrew Strong's # 452 through 477 — from Elijah to Elisha.
G2243-
Lists Greek Strong's from # 2243 onward, beginning at Elijah.

Getting Around

Verse References

Type a reference to go straight there. Book names abbreviate the way you would expect.

John 3:16
Ps 100

Verse Analysis

Use a period . in place of the colon to open the verse analysis instead of the chapter — gematria, positions, distances, and word cloud for that verse.

John 3.16
1Ki 17.1
The Help menu's three pages, as they are — every example in How to Search runs with an account.
