An Introduction to the Backside of Scripture · Part 15 of 15

The Campfire

Sitting With What We've Seen

"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them."

Ephesians 2:10

A Father's Premise

We are not going to wrap this up neatly.

We cannot. The road does not end here — it simply reaches the edge of what this series can carry. There is more horizon ahead than everything we have covered behind us. There are more articles coming. There is, as someone once said, not enough paper in the world to print it all.

But we made some promises along the way. And before we sit down at this campfire and rest for a moment, we are going to keep them.

Then we are going to stop. Not because we have nothing left to say. Because some things are better received in silence than in words.

Pull up a chair. The fire is warm. Let's sit with what we've seen.

What We Promised

In Article 2 we introduced a number — 676 — and told you the path went deeper than we had room to follow. We said the finger of God wrote something at that address, and that it would have its own article.

In Article 7 we glimpsed a single Greek word — poiēma — and told you the mirror shows the reflection, but the poem is what the reflection is made of. We promised to open it fully here.

Both promises point to the same place.

Let's go there together.

The Finger That Writes

In Article 2 we established that the number 26 carries extraordinary weight:

  • Greek Strong's #26 = agape — Love

  • The 26th verse of the Bible = Genesis 1:26 — "Let us make man in our image"

  • The gematria of YHWH = 26

  • The ordinal value of GOD (G=7, O=15, D=4) = 26

  • The English alphabet = 26 letters

  • The 26th occurrence of the word language is the promise in Zephaniah 3:9, that God would restore a pure language... and the 27th time, it was made tangible.

"That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;"
    — 1 John 1:1

26 is the number of Love. Written into the structure of Scripture, into the name of God, into the architecture of human communication itself.

Now: 26 × 26 = 676.

Hebrew Strong's #676 is the word for finger — as in the finger of God.

The first time it appears in Scripture is when the Egyptian magicians, unable to replicate the miracles of Moses, declared: "This is the finger of God." In the New Testament, Jesus says that if He casts out devils by the finger of God, the Kingdom has come.

H676

The Ten Commandments — so often read as a legal code, a list of demands pressed down from a distant judge — were written by that finger. Not as law. As love-language. The finger that wrote You shall have no other gods before me is the same finger that stooped in the dust to defend a woman from her accusers, writing words no one else recorded.

Love, squared, writes with its finger.

Now look at what Webster's dictionary says at position 676.

Webster's Vol 1 Word #676 is ADAM — man; primarily the name of the human species; the word signifies form, shape, or suitable form; connected with the idea of likeness, image.

Webster's Vol 2 Word #676 is MASTERPIECE — a capital performance; any thing done or made with superior or extraordinary skill. The chief excellence or talent.

The finger of God — Love squared — fashioned ADAM out of the dust of the ground.

And at the same address in the other volume, Webster's calls what that finger made a MASTERPIECE.

The Price of Dust

Adam was made from dust.

That is not an insult. It is a statement about raw materials. The canvas before the Artist touched it. The lump of clay before the Potter's hands began.

Here is the question the series has been building toward — the one that the poiēma, the masterpiece, the finger of God, and John 3:16 all converge on:

What is a masterpiece worth?

Not what are its raw materials worth. Not the price of the dust, or the canvas, or the clay. What is the finished work worth — the thing the Artist made, planned, breathed into, and called very good?

The answer is not found in the materials. It is found in the price the Artist was willing to pay to get it back when it was lost.

John 3:16

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

We arrived at that verse in Article 7 — sitting quietly at position #26,137, surrounded by other verses, not on a billboard, not announced with fanfare. The phone keypad value of Bible pointing through Webster's to Universe pointing through Webster's to Verse pointing to the most recognized sentence in human literature.

Now we understand what it is saying about you.

The raw materials are dust. The price of redemption is the Son of God.

The distance between those two things is your value in the eyes of the One who made you.

Not the price of dirt.

The price of the Son.

The Poem

Now we can open the word we have been holding since Article 7.

Ephesians 2:10

"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them."

The word translated workmanship is Greek Strong's #4,161 — poiēma.

It is the word from which we get our English word poem.

G4161

Not a manufactured product. Not an assembly line output. A poem — something composed with intention, shaped with care, arranged so that every element contributes to the whole, planned before the first word was written.

The New Living Translation renders it plainly: "We are God's masterpiece."

Webster's Vol 2 #676 said the same thing before Paul wrote it. Before Moses wrote Genesis. Before the dust was gathered from the ground.

The finger that is Love squared — 26 × 26 = 676 — fashioned you from materials worth nothing and made something worth everything. Not because of what you are made of. Because of what He made you into. Because of what He was willing to spend to bring you home.

You are not a random arrangement of matter that the universe accidentally produced.

You are a poem.

Written by the God who is Love, with the finger that wrote the commandments, planned before the foundation of the world, worth the full price of the Son.

The Question

We have been circling this question since Article 8. We planted it there. We deepened it in Article 9. We heard it in the garden in Article 11 — a Father walking in the cool of the day, calling out to the one hiding in the bushes.

"Where are you?"

Not because He doesn't know. He knows exactly where you are. He knew before you arrived at this article, before you started this series, before you were born.

He asks because He is waiting for an answer.

Adam hid because he believed a lie — that the God who made him had been withholding something, that the shame he felt was the truth about who he was, that the Voice walking in the garden was coming to condemn rather than to restore.

Every lie the inner voice has told you about yourself is the same lie, wearing a different face.

You are not behind. You are not too broken. You are not too far gone. You are not the sum of your worst moments. You are not what the accusing voice says when you are alone in the dark.

You are the poem.

You are the masterpiece.

You are the little man or daughter of the eye — the reflection held in the gaze of the Father who has never stopped seeing you the way He saw you before the lie arrived.

And the Voice walking in the garden is not coming to deliver a verdict.

It is coming to bring you home.

Where are you?

The Campfire

We promised a journey. We have delivered one.

From Strong's concordance to the speed of light. From Superman's Hebrew name to Samson's destiny written in pi. From the 26 path to the universe summarized in one verse. From the first rainbow to the finger of God. From the hall of faith to the blind man led by the hand out of town.

And here we are — at the edge of what this series can carry, looking out at a horizon that keeps moving.

There are more articles coming. This series is the first of many. Twenty years of accumulated treasure from the field does not fit in twelve articles — it barely fits in a lifetime of telling. What you have read here is the doorway, not the house. The first page, not the book.

But before you walk through the door, sit here for a moment.

The fire is warm. The road behind you is real. What you have seen cannot be unseen.

A book written by forty authors across fifteen hundred years, in three languages, on three continents — carrying a hidden mathematical architecture that no human committee could have engineered. The King showing up in pi at the position of his own name. The speed of light landing on the first rainbow. The universe pointing to the one verse. The finger of God writing Love squared into the address of the masterpiece.

And underneath all of it — running through every article, every chain, every discovery — a Father walking in a garden, asking a question He already knows the answer to.

Where are you?

You have the tools now. You know how to dig. The field is yours — the same field the man in Matthew 13:44 sold everything to buy, not because the field was valuable, but because of what was hidden in it.

The treasure is real.

The God who hid it is more real than the treasure.

And He has been waiting — patiently, creatively, with a father's love — for you to find your way back to the sound of His voice in the garden.

For the Young Person Reading This

You started this series as a reader.

You end it as a digger.

You have the tools. You know what Strong's concordance is. You know what Webster's 1828 is. You know how to count from the last verse of the Bible. You know that the phone keypad in your pocket is a reading instrument for the language of the universe.

And you know that the God who encoded all of this into the structure of a book written before your grandparents were born — that God knows your name.

Not approximately. Not in a general sense. Your specific name, your specific story, your specific address in the architecture of the text.

You are not an accident.

You are the poem.

Go dig.

A Closing Word

I began this series by telling you that God is a Redeemer of Time — that the painful seasons are not lost seasons, that the detours are not mistakes, that He reaches backward into your past and redeems even that.

I end it with the same conviction, deeper now than when I started.

The encounter I had on October 23, 2006 did not give me a map. It gave me a shovel and a direction. Everything this series contains came out of the ground one discovery at a time — each one confirming what was found before it, each one opening a new question, each one arriving with the quiet assurance of a Father who says:

Keep going. There is more.

I am still walking. The road ahead is longer than the road behind.

And it is worth it.

Every step.

The Backside of Scripture continues — more series, more discoveries, more of the hidden architecture that no human committee could have engineered and no human lifetime is long enough to fully uncover.

The tools are in your hands. The field is before you.

Begin.

Reflection Questions

  1. The raw materials are dust. The price of redemption is the Son. What does that gap tell you about your actual value in the eyes of the One who made you — and how does that change the way you hear the voice inside that tells you otherwise?
  2. You are God's poiēma — His poem, His masterpiece, composed with intention before you arrived. If that is true, what does it mean for the parts of your story that feel like mistakes? Can a poem contain tension and darkness and still be exactly what the Poet intended?
  3. "Where are you?" — the question God asked Adam, the question running through this entire series. Now that you have come this far — now that you have seen what you have seen — what is your answer?
